As a small business owner, I’ve come to appreciate other small businesses so much more. I know the time, the energy and the heart that goes into owning a business. We have so many amazing businesses here in the Maritimes.  I love reading about and seeing new businesses pop up, it’s so inspiring.

I think it’s important for communities to work with small businesses,  whether we have a storefront or work from home, we all make a difference. The business community where I live only recognizes businesses with a storefront and doesn’t allow home-based businesses to be a part of the business community group. In an age of computer technology and so many online businesses, it seems like some very old-fashioned thinking.

I love to promote small businesses and last November started advertising them for free on my website. We grow when we work together, not against each other.

Every two months I switch up the businesses up. I’m always amazed how many are out there and how many I haven’t heard of. Right now we have several new businesses on our page that are new to me. A lady who does beautiful modern pottery, Petite Pottery Market.

Another business new to me is Pine Tree Handcrafted, who specialized in handcrafted knits. Have a look at all her lovely pieces.

Downtown Dartmouth now has a great new place for people who want to sew, Seam Work.  They are outfitted with six sewing machines and all of the sewing tools you can think of. They offer classes for complete beginners to those who are experienced sewists with a passion for learning new skills. Besides classes, they also offer sewing machine hourly rentals and studio rentals for those who want to host their own workshop or meeting. Such a great addition to Dartmouth!.

The photographer I work with has decided to devote more time to building her business this year and has launched a new page and I couldn’t be happier for her. Selena Houghton Photography specializes in product shot photography but also does weddings and everyday photography.

and of course, Indie Home who’s things we’ve loved for a long time. I have a couple of her beautiful rock candles in my home, they are so unique and I’ve given several as gifts. I love handmade gifts. She also makes modern concrete plant pots, they’re so nice!.
